When Aurora was born an evil curse was placed upon her by her father's ex. On Aurora's coronation, Maleficent placed a curse that on her 16th birthday she would prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die. After Maleficent left a fairy changed the curse that she would fall in a deep sleep and could be wakened by true loves kiss.
