9 year old Peter Noman lives at an orphanage in the run-down city of Falten, and he hates it. From the orphanage's bitter owner Lady Clairea to the pitiful toddlers who always get adopted first, Falten and his home therein make Peter want to run away and never come back.

When Peter is adopted by a stranger who stops at Falten in his travels, he believes his dreams have come true. However, he soon realizes that the stranger is more than he seems, and the seemingly bleak future he had at Falten was heavenly compared to the future his new father has planned for him.
