The world of Iafecyl has always been at peace, but with the assassination of the princess of Orela, the world has fallen into disarray. Orela believes their sister country, Euromari, is responsible for the death of the princess, and the two continents are now on the brink of war. However, a girl named Assana Chaevyre, living in one of the small towns in Euromari, has no idea of any of this and decides to travel to the capital city of Orela in hopes of becoming an herbalist's apprentice. However, with her accent, looks, and clothing, someone recognizes her as Euromarian immediately and decides to hide her temporarily, lest she be attacked by the angry Orelai.
But the stranger who takes her in isn't just a normal citizen, but the crown prince himself, August Orela. He plans to smuggle Assana onto a boat headed back to Euromari, but until then, she'll have to stay with the kind owners of an inn called The Spotted Tiger. The prince assures her she'll be safe, but things in Orela are getting tenser every day. Talk of a war is spreading through the streets, and the Orelai are growing more and more hostile towards Assana's people.
As she spends more time in Orela and more time with August, Assana slowly begins to uncover a mysterious plot that may just be the end of the Orelai royal family and the peaceful world as they know it. As tensions rise and new twists are revealed at every turn, Assana struggles to clear the name of her people and save the boy she cares about more than she'd like to admit.

Saya grew up in a small village, on an extremely small island. Her dad died when she was a year old. He was in the army and went off to fight but never returned. Saya's mom had cancer since Saya was six. Everyone knew it, but she tried so hard to hide it rather than ask for help. She tried to fight it at the same time but it never worked, the treatments always failed. When she died, Saya was barely eight years old, and had to go live with her uncle, on the opposite coast of the island. He was abusive to her, but she never had anywhere to go and Saya felt bad for him. His wife had died the year before, so he didn't think he had a purpose in life. The neighbors knew what he was doing, but didn't have the proof to bring it to the police. Saya heard of a tiquando class nearby, and wanted to learn to protect herself, so she snuck in every day and practiced from a safe distance. One day, two kids found her and they later became friends, their names were Lin and Jaune. When Saya was eleven, her uncle was murdered, and the police arrested her, since she was the only one living there. Later, Lin and Jaune were arrested trying to break her out. They've been there ever since. Hey guys! So I know this is a long description, but that is just a little background information on the main character in this book.
