She has become the best girl on her track team and has the highest average in her English literature class. To get away from her family she spends her time in a room, she calls it the Shoebox because it feels like the size of a shoebox, reading.

Ash has lived with his drunk of a mother and grandmother for his whole life. After his grandmother stuffers a heart attack that kills her, he decides to move in with his father. At his old school, he was known to be a meathead but he wants to change. He wants to turn invisible instead of being in the spotlight all the time.
