For almost as long as he could remember, or at least for as long as he could count to ten, Devan has been doing things by 9 all his life. open and close his bedroom door 9 times. Switch the light on and off 9 times. Check to make sure all the doors are closed 9 times. He doesn't know where the number came from, but he can't even seem to control the fact that he has to things 9 times every time. Especially with the imminent threat of danger he feels if he thinks about not doing something 9 times. He can deal with his abusive mom, tormentors at school, but when he is plagued with the fear of being gay, it's a little too much to handle.
