An imagination is supposedly the most important aspect of childhood; the capability to see the world in a manner that isn't true, but is at least an escape from reality is  perhaps the only thing that keeps us going. Unfortunately, not all adults believe an imagination is supposed to last for more than 10 years. 

And sadly, Elie is surrounded by adults.
