After killing the stag and forcing the amplifier on Alina, the Darkling decides that letting Alina and Mal go might be a better investment. After all, the boy is only mortal, one day he will die and Alina will return to his waiting arms. "I'm not going to kill you, Mal. I don't need to. Time will do it for me" ________________________________ "All right." She did little to hide her shock. "What?" "You can go, Alina." She narrowed her eyes and opened her mouth but he cut her off before she could spew whatever distrustful comments she had planned. "You and the tracker can go and live out your merry little lives. Have your 50 years, maybe even 70 if you're lucky, and when your fantasy crumbles around you, you will see that only you and I remain. All Things Must End
A year after Alina Starkov tears down the Shadow Fold, she is finally able to settle into her peaceful life. There is no more war with Ravka. The Darkling, once her enemy, is now a loyal, protective husband, and a father to their adoptive daughter, Amelia. But all things must end. The Sun Summoner learns that a time of peace can become a time of chaos and upheaval in the blink of an eye. As quickly as one war ends, another can emerge. Alina must protect her country as Queen while making sure that the Darkling doesn't revert to his old villainous self, or else all they have built will come crashing down. I send the Cut barrelling at the monster. It dissociates into nothing only for another one to take its place. Again, I send the Cut through the abomination, but it was only a diversion.
