I never thought all those lessons my grandmother taught me at her old kitchen stove would save my life. I never thought that my grandfather teaching me to plant and care for a garden would become my life line. I never thought the stories I was told by my great grandmother about the Great Depression would become secrets I protected.
The list of things I never thought would happen goes on and on and on. I live day by day off the lessons I was taught as a child. I often wonder if the older generation knew something mine did not, but how could they. All I know is that I am glad I listened. I am glad I cared enough to learn, because that's what has set me apart. What has kept me alive.
