Fifteen year-old Merlyn Nicholas Baxter has been waiting many years for a moment that would change his life forever. So far, his life has been very... Ordinary. Boring, almost. But that event... That moment- he knows it will definitely spice things up. Nearly all of his friends have experienced this, and Merlyn has grown impatient; yet now, his long wondering of when his own time will come is beginning to draw to a close.... In a world where humans have evolved to shift into certain beasts to protect themselves against the apocalypse, a normal fifteen year-old will find that on the dawn of their sixteenth birthday, with just a thought or an emotion, they will be able to transform into the animal they were destined to be. Very rarely are so-called "mythological" creatures an option, and many are sure they do not even exist; but when Merlyn finds his destiny to be that of a red, blue-eyed mountain dragon, he begins to think that maybe such beasts actually do, or used to, at least, live in the very world everyone resides in. Unfortunately, when everyone else discovers his new secret, things do not go well. Soon our little dragon boy finds himself as an outcast, and just when he believes that his life isn't worth living anymore.... He meets someone who is just like him.

Being 16 sucks. Being 16 and running away after you burn down a library with flames you shoot from your hands, trying to carve out a place in the world for yourself while understanding this strange curse double sucks. Getting interrupted from figuring out magic completely on your own by an evil witch with plans to take over the world by doing *extremely* gross things to dead bodies triple sucks. Add in a pet mouse, a hot boy who shows up halfway through and amounts of emotional suppression never before known to mankind and you get a rough approximation of Max's life.
