"Just drop the knife, babe." Jack had a devilish grin on his face. There he stood, completely oblivious to what was coming for him.
"I'll take you to dinner tonight," he offered with his hands up in surrender. "Just put the knife away."
I stepped closer to my husband (I still found myself hesitant to call him that) from one side, as the assassin came closer on the other side. I whispered and threatened, "If you say one more word I actually will stab you. Now stay still."
The assassin couldn't see us yet, but I knew it was only a matter of time. I had to get Jack out of this place before the killer had the chance to make a move.
Jack took a step to me, closing the gap that was between us. Part of me was thinking this would go so much more smoothly if he knew what was going on, but I knew I couldn't tell him. After all, that was part of what I was being paid for.
