After the experiment is over, Tobias Eaton lives in the newly settled Chicago. When his mother arrives in the city, he is afraid she might threaten the peace in the city. Along with this, Tobias still feels grief over the loss of Tris. Will he be able to save the city and deal with his grief? This story is told in "then" and "now" parts. The Then parts being before the epilogue of "Allegiant" and the Now parts take place after the epilogue.

Tris falls into a state of depression after the war and her impromptu breakup that occurred at the end of it, and returning back to Abnegation--to the same house as her traitor brother--doesn't help. Tobias remains in Dauntless, but while he isn't exactly despondent, he does feel out of place. He doesn't fit in and cannot go on with normal life after everything that happened. Then, Choosing Day arrives. And history definitely does not repeat itself when Tris goes through the initiation process with her old friends and enemies, her ex-boyfriend, and the new sixteen-year-olds, while citizens of Chicago are mysteriously dying. They find out that they will be expecting but the plan for a family is cut short when they are kidnapped, brought to The Milwaukee Experiment, and are wiped of their memories. Tris' memory is spared due to her divergence but no one knows. She will have to escape the city with the ones she loves in order to create a lasting future for her and her child.
