Nan Harp loves numbers; so much so, that she has developed a mathematical science that determines the compatibility between two individuals based solely upon the Love Number she assigns to each person.

There are five categories that Nan evaluates before assigning a Love Number: patience, temperament, intellect, adaptability, and integrity. In each category, a person's score may range from negative Ten to positive Ten, and the mean of all five sub-scores becomes that individual's Love Number.

Nan has found that the magic sum is One. This means that only couples with a combined Love Score of One have statistically supported relationships. 

In addition to her adoration of numbers, Nan has another, more secretive obsession: Parker Fields. Because Nan is slightly biased toward herself, she is incapable of determining her own Love Number. Parker is the only Zero that Nan has ever encountered, leading her to believe that Parker is the perfect man to evaluate her.

 In her quest to discover her Love Number and get acquainted with men who have complementary Love Numbers, she finds herself thinking less about the men who are supported by the math and more about the man that is wrong for her in nearly every way. As Nan begins to trust her heart more than her numbers, she learns to abandon the science that she so meticulously crafted and leave love up to chance.
