Deep down underground, there is a laboratory. Doctor Y lives down there. And he has 4 teenage victims for his tests. He has brain washed them to forget their names, how they came down there and their families. So doctor Y thought it was reasonable to not give them a new name. He just called them 1, 2, 3 and 4.
