A gunshot rang out through the air. Seconds later, I heard a loud thump a few meters in front of me. I let out a shriek and froze, my tears soaking the cloth. Knees crumbling underneath me, I fell to the floor, sobbing wildly. A hand touched my shoulder but I shoved it away angrily.
A long silence followed.
I felt a prick on my shoulder and a cold liquid seeping into my veins, then nothing. Nothing. Nothing.

I blinked. My eyes began focusing on shapes. I could hear murmuring voices. I could smell medication. I could taste blood. I could feel scratchy blankets lying over my frail body.
