Moana was just a normal sixteen year old attending high school and trying to survive day by day. She's also a loner with no friends and spends all of her time reading history books and relaxing by the ocean rather than socializing with anyone other than her parents and grandmother. It's not that she's antisocial, she just has a hard time relating to everyone else. Though, things change one day when the ocean somehow chooses her to find a demigod whom she's only ever heard of in legends. Will she ignore the call or take this opportunity to change her life forever?

Two years after Moana returns to Motunui, her life seems to have gone back to what it was before Te Fiti. Chiefly duties outweigh the calling of the sea, Maui has been gone for what seems like ages, and Moana's unhappiness returns, but is now self inflicted. After swallowing one of Auahitūroa's (God of Comets) stars by accident, Tangaroa (God of the Sea) gives his heart to the Ocean so it will be protected from Auahitūroa's wrath. Somehow (but not really a mystery) Moana comes across the heart on the shores of Motunui. It unfortunately comes with a few consequences, including a new relationship with the water, conscious tattoos which come from nowhere and Moana's new status as a Demigoddess of the Great Ocean, and half-daughter of Tangaroa. What could possibly go wrong?

So when she finally gets the chance to cross the reef four years later, she finds her sister and together, they must find Maui, demigod of the wind and sea, and restore the heart of Te Fiti.
