She was studying to be marine biologist  and he was studying to be a doctor it was a world win romance the kind of love that you read in novels but five days after graduation Meredith finds out that she is pregnant terrified she flies after breaking up with Derek telling him it will never work and what they had was just a collage fling

Meredith is a single mother Marine Biologist who lives in Rockland, Maine with her seven year old daughter Savannah. Savannah like her mother loves studying the ocean one day she decides to do the message in a bottle project knowing the possibility of someone not finding her message she writes about how much her mom has done for her and how she deserves to have someone to do the same for her but in an adult way being smart like her mom and dad she doesn't include their names but gives an address so if someone ends up finding the bottle they have a way of getting in contact 

Derek lives in Boston he is a part time antique dealer, writer, and art teacher. He has had a hard life from seeing his father get shot right in front of him at the age of ten to losing the love of his life back in college which caused him never to fall in love again but in some way he's happy with the life he has or so he thinks
