This is a story told from the point of view of a twelve-year-old boy, Arthur, against the backdrop of a devastating regional war. Torn away from normal life and with everything around him in ruins, he struggles painfully to survive, and as he does so, strange quirks of fate bring different people and adventures into his life. Eventually he ends up at a school on the remote Emerald Island, along with a group of children of his own age. There, violent conflicts proceed under the guise of regular, peaceful everyday life, slowly unraveling secrets and revelations that will shake the foundations of his identity and the world itself...

The gang is with him the whole time and tries their hardest to keep him at his best, but Johnny becomes irrational, too unpredictable for the gang to even understand but Johnny doesn't go down alone, he brings someone with him.
