Trouble has always followed Tye Longshadow like gum on the bottom of his secondhand skateboard. The typical high school bullies exploit his Mescalero Apache heritage. His father died in the war overseas. His mom's new boyfriend is a walking heap of buffalo dung. When he steals a laptop from the new electronics store behind his house, everyone sees it as a rather extreme cry for help. The only thing is, Tye didn't steal the laptop. Unable to prove his innocence, Tye is sent off to STAR Juvenile Rehabilitation Center for five years to "meditate on his actions" as his grandfather puts it. Tye's not the only one wrongfully imprisoned. Virgil Hawkins was accused of minor terrorism when he accidentally hacked into a top-secret government file while he was bored. Asami Koizumi took the fall for her foster parents when their cocaine and heroin stash was found in her bedroom. Ed Dorado Junior, like Tye, was a convenient scapegoat for a robbery, and seen as trying to catch his dad's attention when his patients consumed more and more of his time. Doctor Dorado and Doctor Wilcox, who run the place, are both a bit of a control freak, but the chief therapist, Mrs. Lance, is super nice and she always has candy for her patients. Here, Tye has a room to himself, three meals a day, and doesn't have to worry about when Maurice is going to beat him. Maybe, for just once in his life, he can stay out of trouble.
