Jacob Portman didn't have very many friends, but he did have Ricky and Emilia. The three of them always had each other's backs, until Jake's grandfather died. Ricky immediately stayed out of Jacob's way, thinking he'd gone a little insane. Em, however, understood everything he was going through and stayed with him. As Jake discovered more about his grandfather's life, he became determined to go to the discreet island of Cairnholm, regardless of his parents' opinions. Em convinces one of their teachers to do a field trip there, forcing Jake's parents to let him go. Together, they find something incredible about his grandfather's past and experience magical- and peculiar- encounters.
