Life is never easy for Mari Lawrence. Between a mother that regrets giving birth to her, an absent father, and a relentless bully, Mari has never known happiness. Things are made even worse when Dylas Mane, her bully, loses his mother, who happens to be the best friend of Mari's mother. Dylas moves in with them, much to both of their dismay. At the same time, a new student begins to attend their school. When he sees the way Dylas treats Mari, he, unlike everyone else, sticks up for her. As Mari begins to fall for him, she starts to learn more about Dylas and develops feelings for him as well. Mari's depression worsens when her mother admits that she regrets not having the abortion and Dylas becomes cold and distant. At the end of her rope, she makes an attempt on her life that changes everything for her.
