Elysia is a Freelancer; she does not live in one of the protected cities, she is not genetically engineered, and she is a woman. She is also not from this Earth, where there is only 10% of the once habitable land that is still fertile and can sustain human life, and women have become a scarcity and a hot commodity for the elite.
Alex is her best friend, and one of the elite. After being adopted by a rich family, he now lives the life of one of the last few million people on Earth, so 17th birthday marks the day of His Choice - the day that he will select a bride to help repopulate the Earth.
Both have been dropped into a world that they never thought that they would have to understand, and they have to, together, find a way to get back to their home. Their Earth.

She is aware of the things that the servants and handmaidens say about her. She also doesn't care. She just wants to leave. It all changes, however, when she gets exactly what she wished for, but at a price. Years of turning away suitors led her parents to take her life in their own hands, and they shipped her off to the other side of the world to carry out an arranged marriage with the handsome Prince Caspian, heir to the Shah of the Sand Nomads. Io knew that as far as future husbands went, she lucked out. Caspian was kind and considerate-however, the only issue was that on the day of their wedding, his older sister, Callisto, would be sacrificed in honor of their marriage. Io didn't like murder to begin with, but as she befriended Callisto, she realized that she didn't want to say goodbye just yet. In Martha's world, an alternative earth, the people follow the rules of 'The Grandmothers'. When you turn twenty five you are shelved, no longer allowed to date and forbidden from marrying. The earth is still recovering from the third world war. Resources are controlled by the Elites and the environment is polluted and many countries are damaged beyond repair. The population that survived the war has been ravaged by chemical weapons. The genders are out of balance. For over sixty years the birth rate of female babies has far outweighed their male counterparts. Women are resigned to the knowledge that if they are not married by the time they are twenty five that they never will be. They have limited choices once they are shelved. Martha chooses to go against the wishes of her family. She will spend the rest of her life taking care of her widowed Father as opposed to working and giving all her money to her younger female cousins to supplement their dowry. Fate and time has a different plan. Martha is drawn into a battle between The 19 and The Wild Roses. Two different factions each wanting to use and twist Martha for their own ambitions.
