Avery Smith is a 25 year old high school counselor who lives in sunny Southern California with her roommate and best friend Alexa Jones. She and her best friend long for a sense of adventure, love and most importantly happiness. Avery is a shy, quiet girl who doesn't mind staying home and reading a book. Bear Brown, the wild child of the Brown family, is used to doing things in the "most extreme" way possible in his home of Southeastern Alaska. His life is documented on the popular TV show called Alaskan Bush People. Bear and his family moved to California due to his mother's health and that the family did not have access to the care that his mother needed. Avery and Bear could not be any more different, so how could a romance blossom between these two seemingly polar opposite people?

Senior year had never seemed so daunting. After her sister died, Avery found out just how much she hid behind Riley and how comfortable it had been to live through her stories instead of living her own. Realizing that and making a change, however, were two different things, as Avery soon understood. But life had not given her much of a choice. Maintaining a safe distance between herself and all those who used to know Riley was her miserable attempt at dealing with the grief. But she saw her strategic plan crumble, forced to face the friends she had been pushing away. The year she believed she could breeze through was revealing itself to be the year she must face all the pain she had been repelling. And there was no one to hide behind now.
