In the Cerulean Kingdom, people of pure noble birth are granted extraordinary gifts. Most are little more than parlor tricks but a few acquire much more formidable abilities.
Enter Maven Lockheart a twenty year old male of low noble birth known as the Twisted Phoenix. He is calculating and streetwise but his biggest chip is that he has a nasty disdain for the very class that he belongs to. So to kill two birds with one stone, he wanderers the countryside looking to bate wealthier nobles into duels so that he can swindle them out of their money.
Dueling has been his profession since turning seventeen and his life while fraught with traveling is steady and somewhat peaceful until he runs into a noble girl named Valerie whose father he is set to duel to the death. After failing to persuade Maven to give up the duel she ends up tricking him into a magically binding contract to become her servant. Maven is then forced to accompany her on a journey across the land and along the way his moral compass, his ability to love, and the very hatred for his own kind is brought into question.
