Lyra Reid spends her last hours in her home in Japan saying goodbyes to her friends as her alcohol-driven mom stumbles out of the house with their little amount of belongings. Lyra gets her few clothes, laptop, electronics, and her very special violin - made by her father - and gets into the cab to the airport. She then starts her life anew, living through the struggles of a sudden change in life, while discovering something new about herself she would have never guessed.

Attending the school Lyra gets enrolled into, she meets a young boy named Tate who has a huge anxiety issue when it comes to new people. Lyra later discovers he's been on heavy medication to subdue a horrifying illness that is terminal, slowing down the symptoms. The two spend their senior year together making a name for themselves in the school, performing music.

"It's one of the many things you can do, it's the only thing I can do, so just pick up your damn instrument, and play!"
