Luna, "Fay", had gone to a high school party previously the night before, and has gotten drunk like every other teenager. What she doesn't remember is leaving the party and going to an alleyway where she met Luke. He's a vampire, he changed her. He had to change her to keep her safe from the Conrelys, (pronounced con-ro-lies)the bad vampires.
Luke suddenly attends school to keep her safe. Fay feels a spark between the two when they meet, she feels strong, powerful. When she's away she feels weak and vulnerable.
