They don't know how but Molly is the only mermaid born without a tail. Her father (the king of their society) deals with the harsh reality of it by locking her away for the first 10 years of her life. When she is finally released she realizes that the world isn't all sugar plums and gum drops. It's cruel and it's out to get her. She will do what ever it takes to protect what little family she has. If we tell a human we are a mermaid we immediately die and turn into water so we can't just go around and ask everybody if they were mermaids.
