17 parts Complete "Terry?" Alethea's soft voice came from behind him. "Are you alright?"
"Shouldn't you be inside with Xander?" The words came out harsher than intended.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing. Everything. The way you look at him, laugh with him." Terry turned, his dark eyes intense. "Did you even miss me while I was gone?"
"How dare you?" Color flooded her cheeks. "I searched for you endlessly. I fought against everyone who tried to stop me from finding you."
"With Xander by your side, apparently."
"He helped me because he cared! While others gave up hope, he believed in me - in us!"
"And now he cares rather more than he should, doesn't he?"
Their heated exchange was interrupted by Xander himself stepping through the terrace doors. "Is everything alright out here?"
"Perfect timing." Terry's laugh held no humor. "Why don't you tell me exactly how much you care for Alethea?"
"Terry, stop this." Alethea stepped between them.
"No, Al, let him ask." Xander's usual easy manner hardened. "Yes, I care for her. How could I not, after watching her fight so desperately to find you? After seeing her strength, her determination, her heart?"
"Xander, please-" Alethea began, but he continued.
"I love her. There, I've said it. But I've never acted on those feelings because I know her heart belongs to you - though at this moment, I question whether you deserve it."
Terry surged forward, but Alethea's hand on his chest stopped him. "Both of you, enough! We're at a celebration, in the King's palace!"
"My apologies, Al." Xander bowed slightly. "I should not have spoken so freely. If you'll excuse me."
As he left, Alethea rounded on Terry. "What is wrong with you? Xander has been nothing but loyal!"
"Loyal? He just confessed his love for you!"
"And in the same breath acknowledged that I love you! Or are you so blinded by jealousy you missed that part?"
