The Affliction: A girl who wonders what person in their right mind could love a girl with a broken heart, both physically and emotionally.

The Cure: A whirlwind set on making her life better, even though he has his own problems that might end up getting in the way of his goal.

He coaxes her from her shell through compassion and acceptance. She inspires him to try harder and keep his path on the straight and narrow.

This is a love story that involves a heart disorder, a twisted bucket list of sorts, an outlaw motorcycle club, and just a small touch of violence. Through it are struggles of life’s uncertainties, self-doubt, the scattered lie, heaps of angst, and what changes when you finally allow someone to see the real you.

Excerpt:

“I may be a logical person when it comes to business, but I’m a firm believer in fate. I believe there’s a reason we keep popping up in each other’s lives, Julia. And I care about you because you don’t seem to care much about yourself, and that’s no way to live.”

As he speaks each sentence with vehemence, he approaches me again until there’s about an aching foot of distance between us. His close proximity does the same thing it did to me last night. It scares and exhilarates me.

“You don’t care about me,” I breathe, in denial.

“I do,” he objects with force, his face close to mine.

“You shouldn’t.”

“Why not? Give me one good reason.”

How can I, Emma Parker, possibly fall into the arms of my best friend, Harry Styles, if I can't even tell him the most crucial and defining parts of my past? Lina, my other best friend seems to think that he and I are meant to be together. Could she be right? I just want an escape, from the nightmares, from the memories, from the fear and if anyone can help me it would be him. But I'm scared. I know it's all Harry wants, to be there for me and I know he's the key to my serenity if only I can muster up the courage to let him in. ***** |"Emma?" Someone said tapping me on the shoulder and derailing my train of thought. Weird, how did he know my name, I hadn't even talked to anyone yet, I barely spoke to the women giving out the welcome portfolios. Who on Gods green planet could know me here? It couldn't be Lina, she was most definitely still flirting with the boy at the desk and at any rate it was a man standing behind me. Turning around and taking my first look at him there was something familiar about him. It was the boy Lina had hand picked for me to date just a few moments before. Maybe it was meant to be I internally laughed at myself, fat chance. But there was something else about the tall boy with soft brown curls shaping his face, defined cheekbones, and piercing green eyes staring down at me. He had to be more than a random boy from across the room but what was it? Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. Those eyes had haunted me for years. Green globes that I hadn't seen in what, nine years? It couldn't be could it? Was it really him. "Harry?" | *** (This is my first time doing this so bear with me. Thanks! We ran through the crowded, messy, but beloved streets of our city, Manhattan. He gripped my hand and pulled me further as we sprinted by stores, stands, and plenty of people. I tried to turn around to see if the cops had gained on us, but my head whipped back around to see a stroller straight ahead of me. I took a sharp left and barely dodged it. I could tell he needed a break, so we sprinted into an alley. In the middle of the deserted alleyway, he stopped and tried to quit panting. All of a sudden, I saw a bright blue uniform, two, on either end of the alley. The cops, dang. Each of them had a gun pointed straight at us. They slowly edged towards the two victims in the middle, which just happened to be me and him, but refused to lower their weapons. Harry looked furious. “Try me,” he teased at the cops. “THAT’S IT!” bellowed the one to my right. “You’d better try to shield yourself.” He got ready to pull the trigger. My heart started to race as fast as the bullet would come. I felt Harry’s hand tighten around mine. Just as I heard the gun fire, Harry threw his other arm around me and we crashed to the floor, and I blacked out.
