Spain, 1539. Humans and merfolk coexist somewhat peacefully, despite the latter species' dangerous and elusive nature. 

Rafael Reyes is a metalworking merchant who can barely get by. His life is simple, routine, and terribly depressing. In his opinion, variety and excitement are things for people who don't struggle to buy a loaf of bread.

But excitement shows up on the shoreline, whether he wants it to or not. It shows up as a creature that is just as capable of stealing his heart as it is of ripping it out.
