Southern England, 1895. Every year, 100 girls begin their education at St Anne's School for Girls- some rely on their fathers' titles, others on their own intelligence. Margaret Harris won a scholarship, and must be consistently high-achieving in order to remain there.

Ophelia Mallon-Griffiths is the daughter of a High Court Judge, and has never had to work for anything. She never desired to attend St Anne's, and yet is there purely because of her father's position in society.

Throughout her first year, Margaret learns of the darker side of the seemingly all-positive private education system. Now on her last year, Ophelia must, for the first time in her life, make an effort to get what she wants: a future with the young man who works at the docks. Though they couldn't be more different, both girls recieve an important education that year: one which would change their lives forever.
