Pony Curtis had lived their whole life as two things that were in many senses looked down a upon: being a greaser and a girl. She couldn't help being either of those things, she was just born that way. Didn't help that she often found herself much more interested in girls than boys, but she was already hated and attacked for things she couldn't fix about herself, so why stop now? She knew that at the very least she can count on her brothers and a gang of boys she grew up with on the tough East side of town. There's not many people she can count on besides them and she could expect things were going stay like that for a long time from now, that was of course, until the night someone took things too far.

With the exception of Pony, no one was closer to Charlotte than Johnny Cade. From the moment they met at the bus stop on her first day of kindergarten and his first day of second grade, they were inseparable and could understand each other with just a look. Johnny was exactly a year and a half older than the twins, and about a year younger than Soda. Due to their birthdays, Soda and Johnny were in the same grade, but he always would ask for Charlotte and Pony when he came over to play. When he was alive, Darrel Curtis Sr. would teasingly call Johnny his son-in-law when people asked who he was in relation to the family.
