Tamaki Okiayu is the only survivor of The Okiayu Clan Slaughter. In her village, Shizen, The Okiayu Clan Slaughter is a well-known event that happened three years ago when Tamaki was age ten and orphaned. The person who orphaned her was none other than her old friend, Emiko Kano. Tamaki was taken in by a family friend, Rin Nobuyuki. Rin also has a job of guarding the Shizen Gates. While taking care of Tamaki, Rinn also takes care of another girl named Kichi Joten.

Kichi Joten was used and abused by her parents. After the fall of The Okiayu Clan, The Joten Clan became the top clan in Shizen. Kichi's parents expected many things from Kichi. They even used her beauty to help in clan trades. She was supposed to be The Heiress of The Joten Clan too; however, she ran away and met Tamaki and Rin on the streets. They were kind enough to take her in and care for her better than her real clan. Soon after, Kichi became great friends with Tamaki and decided to stay with her and her new guardian, Rin.

Snow Yuki is a ninja who's bullied by other rising shinobi like himself. They make fun of his name and look down upon his clan. Snow's last name meant Snow as well, and sounded like the English word, "yucky." Yucky basically meant disgusting, which seemed to fit Snow perfectly according to his bullies. The kids in Shizen Shinobi Academy would call Snow yucky numerous times a day before, during, and after class. One day when Snow was being bullied yet again and tried to stand up for himself. When all seemed lost, Tamaki and Kichi came to his rescue and took care of this mess. After this, Tamaki, Kichi, and Snow became great friends.
