Ashley is a half vampire.  The issue with this is that half vampires are considered weaker than humans. This doesn't stop her from dreaming, in fact, it encourages her. Even if her dream is simply a stepping stone for a bigger and more unachievable dream, it doesn't stop her. In her option, people can spit on her, look down on her if they wish because one day she will change their options.

Ashley has set out on her journey attempting to achieve what no half vampire has done before. She ends up uncovering what should have remained a secret. What she should not have found out in the first place. It will destroy everything.
