A university hosted award winning short-story about two exceptionally talented twins: one with an amazing gift for music, and the other the greatest scientific mind in his generation. Critics of the writing competition had this to say about the story: - '"Heartsong"... attempts an ambitious narrative structure, and it had some genuinely moving moments... The linkage between science and art was quite moving-the implication that the two songs are the same, with one brother capturing it through art and the other through science, is really a nice touch.' - "The narrative structure is familiar, but well done, with a narrative frame containing a backstory. We don't the know the significance or what is at stake with any of it until the very end. Sometimes that doesn't work well for a story, but in this case, I think the author pulled it off, due in large part to the compelling description, subject matter, and character development."

When twins Skylar and Jake were born, their scientist parents used them as an experiment. Each was injected with a dose of serum that would supposedly make them much stronger, smarter, simply better than other kids. But somebody added a chemical that changed the effects of the serum. As a result each twin got only half of the traits they were originally supposed to get. Skylar got the strength and speed while Jake got the brains. When they realized what had happened, the twins' parents immediately put them up for adoption, so neither one knew of the other. 12 years later Skylar is constantly failing all her classes, and Jake is getting bullied because he is so much weaker than other kids. But then Skylar's adoptive family decides to move across the country to find a new school for their daughter, which happens to be the school Jake goes to. They meet completely by accident. In the meantime, their parents have found a way to fix their mistake from 12 years ago -- they can make one of the twins perfect. But it requires for the other twin to give their life.
