The Alcazar in London has often been described as 'the place where a performer's dreams die' - mainly because it operated as a brothel once the sun set.
Orpha Sawyer, Philomena Arrah, Minerva Solstice and Nora Wallace - the best of friends of the 19th century - work together as The Alcazar's top act and are popular with the club's male demographic. They're described as very open yet they actually weren't. They had one secret - they were all queer.
Orpha was always forced to be presentable as a natural born leader and so she conspired with a close friend, Pierre Bourgeois, to be "married". Married to them actually meant that they were husband and wife in public and in secret, they had other lovers who went against social conventions - gay lovers.
