Briana Lynn was staring at the clock. It was 10:39am. Her class was about to end. She had successfully finished her essay and read 1/3 of her textbook. Her best friend, Jessica Martinez, on the other hand was furiously typing on her keyboard. Briana rolled her eyes. She turned around.
"Are you okay?" Briana whispered. Jessica looked up, shook her head, and immediately looked back at her screen. Briana was getting a headache.
"JESS!" Briana whispered, annoyed.
Her friend shrugged. Finally the bell rang. Briana practically jumped out of her chair. Jess sighed and handed over her laptop to Mr. Fitzgerald.
"Well?" Briana asked, opening her locker.
"I got a D." Jess told her. "You mean you got a D and you didn't even finish your essay?" Briana asked. Jess nodded. "Maybe your horrible typing was the reason why." Briana joked. "My typing?" Jess asked.
"It's like an earthquake. Surprised the laptop didn't fall off the desk." Briana laughed. "Hey! That's offensive!" Jess rolled her eyes. "Besides there's not a reason why I didn't finish... I'm just... lazy." Jessica sighed. "You had forty minutes. It wasn't even that long of an essay. Of course there had to be a reason." Briana said. "Okay, okay. But you're going to think I'm crazy."
"I already think you're crazy. Now what is it?" Briana asked. "Vanessa Ariels." Jessica said.
"That girl's harmless. Besides she was just reading her textbook like I was after I finished the essay." Briana told her best friend. Jessica shook her head.
"Do you know how she got her textbook?" She asked. Briana stared at her. "From the library?" She said. "Nope. Mr. Fitz's desk. He was using her book because she already wrote notes on each paragraph." Jessica told her. "So? How did that distract you?" Briana asked. "Because Mr. Fitz was sleeping at the time."
"She probably just got up and took the book from his desk when he wasn't looking. What's wrong with that?" Briana asked.
"Briana... she didn't use her legs.

ONC entry for 2024. Prompt 49: Being a superhero is just too boring. Let's be a villain! 15-years-old Marissa Everstar makes a Faustian bargain to receive superpowers, in the hope they will make her famous. But when being a superhero turns out to mainly involve boring work that does not get her the immediate popularity she craves, she shifts gears and becomes a villain. Trigger warning: contains descriptions of physical and emotional abuse, blood and gore. Excerpt from chapter 2: I carefully begin pouring the white powder onto the floor, drawing a large pentagram. I spend a lot of time on the intricate details, making sure everything is perfect. The summoning circle quite small, but it will have to do. I clap my hands twice and hear a soul-crushing scream that appears to pierce my body to its core. Hearing the sound fills my stomach with butterflies and gives me a fuzzy feeling. I haven't heard a single sound in almost a year. Following the scream, a shadowy figure emerges. He appears deep black, littered with stars, as if a human-like shape has been carved out of the universe, but also strangely transparent, as if made of glass. His long arms end in clawed fingers, and his ears and horns are goat-like in appearance. On his back are two bat-like wings. He speaks in a deep voice-the only one I've heard in a long time. Six high school students looks like anyone else acts like anyone else but are capable of things no one else is. They learnt from a young age no one that means NO ONE can know about their powers even their parents and other siblings. It brings out the true friends and those who just want to use you. In the end, what do you do when your closest friend betrays you? This is the story as they try to keep their biggest darkest secret of what they are capable of and as they discover they're not the only ones like them...
