This is a short story in the epistolary form about a young man on a voyage plagued by spirits. The Scotsman is a member of the nobility serving His Majesty the King in exploration and discovery of the unknown lands for knowledge and expansion of the British Empire. He instead continually occupies a state of liminality between the harsh physical world and the powerful spiritual sphere. His constant desires for companionship in his aching loneliness are met by spirits, ghouls and a peculiar young lady.
