Rose Fontaine is a 16 year old girl living a pretty miserable life by her own standards. Her mother Harmony Belland and father Michael Fontaine divorced when Rose was 6. Her mother ran off to travel the world and she was left to live with her dead beat alcoholic father. Her grades are miserable, her friends are always getting themselves into trouble and pulling her along with them.
3 weeks before winter break Rose comes home from school to find her mother's personal assistant, Brenda Smith at her door. Brenda informs her that her father has drunken his way to the big house this time and is no longer fit to be her caretaker. Rose is to move in with her mom and her mothers new husband ( whom she has never met before.)
Rose refuses. Brenda strikes a deal with Rose. If Rose can't survive one winter break with her new family she will be placed into foster care. However if she enjoys herself she we live with her Mom and stepdad. Nothing in the world could make Rose want to stay and live with her Mom, or so she thought.
"One more thing."
"What," I snarl at Brenda. "What more could you possibly want!"
"I want you to pack some skis. Did I mention that one of your parents winter homes is in Austria?"
