(Inspired by a comment chain.) After his mother and father unexpectedly dies, his cruel stepfather, Thomas Jefferson, and his stepbrothers, James and Aaron, take control of the household-reducing Alexander to a scribe/secretary for them. So when a letter from King Henry Laurens arrives saying a ball will be held for his son, Prince John, to find a wife, Alex believes it's his lucky break. However his stepfamily has other plans....
