On her first day of sixth form, shy, introverted May has a sudden responsibility thrown on her shoulders - to work as an interpreter for her new classmate, the smart, but mute, Jonah, who only communicates by writing and BSL.

May finds difficulties in suddenly having to adapt to having someone follow her around everywhere she goes, and though she does her job as well as she can, she can't seem to enjoy it. To add to that, having to use BSL again several years after the death of her beloved grandmother brings to surface painful memories she tried her best to push down, out of her mind.
