Jason Reynolds is 18 years old when he goes a town over to wait for the bus that will pick him up and take him to Basic Training. He meets a girl as he waits, and they go down to the pier to talk for a while, before he asks if he can write her letters. Those letters are Jason's connection to life outside of the military...and to the girl he may fall in love with.
