Murder. Misery. Monsters.

For some people, life is joyous and fulfilled. Not so for the peasant villagers of Whetchilowe Cleave. Bound to a life of grim servitude, suffering, and death in their cold, gray, wet prison they have no means of escape or hope. Worshippers of a great, dead oak, they are offered as sacrifices in a desperate attempt to revive the decaying tree. And adding to their woes a monster lurks in their midst, stalking their children. Can life get any worse?

With their dying cult deemed an abomination by the new faith sweeping across old England as it usurps ancient ways and bloodlines in its path, the villagers of Whetchilowe Cleave are besieged from all around. But when Walton, one of the King's brutal enforcers rides into the secluded village one day, the villagers flock to him in desperation. Will he be their savior or simply add to their misery?

The Tree of Souls is a novella prequel to The Dreadful Demise of Jake Walton
