At birth, everyone is given a soulmate step counter by the SSC.{soulmate step counter}. Some people are born on what teens call the 'Fast Track' , which means you were born with a low number of steps until you meet your soulmate. On rare occasions people don't get there timers at birth, but if you don't get yours by twenty, you probably won't get it at all.
Castiel Novak is a 20 year old college student who is studying to be a doctor. One day, while walking the halls of Stanford he doesn't notice he counted going down, until it reaches zero.
Dean Winchester is a 21 year old guy who has a brother is attending college at Stanford. He's walking to pick his brother up from the nurse, where he got a broken nose, and doesn't realize his timer is lowering until it's at a BIG FAT ZERO.
