"Why do you do it?" He asks, leaning against the pier.
"Do what?"
"Run barefoot."
I stare out to the horizon, "Because the pain feels great. It feels like home, like I'm alive again. I have control over how my foot bends with the ground, around an object, into the sand. You don't get that control with shoes. But the pain, it's mostly to cover up the pain."
