In the wake of a terrible cataclysm the civilized world is no more. The few surviving humans eke out a meager existence in the stark and barren landscape their ancestors left them. Saber has lived his entire life in the Waste, and now he's alone. But he knows how to survive. He follows his father's rules: 1. Trust No One. 2. Always Boil Water Before Drinking. 3. Never Let the Shades Look You in the Eye. These rules have kept him alive all his life, until he meets the suspicious Vega and her gifted blind companion, Shasta. Exposure to the scorch of the sun turns most people into Shades, red-eyed mutants who haunt the world in greater and greater numbers. But for some, like Shasta, the mutation takes on a different form. Shasta is an oracle. She dreams of the future, and she has seen Saber in her dreams. Slowly, he begins to break his first rule. And that may prove to be the worst mistake he ever makes, if he survives at all. For Shasta's future is dark. As a scheming overlord seeks to harness the powers of mutants, Saber and Vega must overcome their differences and band together to save the one person either of them cares for. But they cannot do it alone. Soon Saber must choose between love and survival, facing his future or running from his past. But no option is safe. For there is no safety for those who live upon the Waste.
