Steven Easton(27) and his niece, Ava(9), just moved up to suburban Iowa from the roughest small town in Alabama.  Steven grew up with next to nothing. His mom cared more about alcohol than her kids, and it eventually took her life due to liver cancer. Stacey, Steven's sister robbed a bank about five years ago, causing Steven to take on the responsibility of legally raising Ava. He had taken her in when she was a baby though because he didn't want another child to grow up like he did. Steven reunited with his father last month, and he's trying to process that. The reason why they chose Iowa is because Steven's aunt, Jen, offered him a job at the best middle school in Iowa. He was a well-known teacher in Alabama because he was one of the few teachers who genuinely cared about his students. That was why his aunt had confidence in hiring him. But will he be able to get along with other adults here in Iowa? He was so used to being liked and listened to in Alabama. Is anyone going to notice him here? Steve(21) Hasn't had a chance to leave this awful place. He has stayed around for the kids, wanting nothing more to be there for each one's graduation. Confused. Lonely. Depression has really started to hit in the last couple of years after all of the tragic losses to the upsidedown. Nearly losing everything and everyone he's cared for and loved. Most everyone has gotten their chance to escape, Nancy and Jonathan moved to California after graduation. Robin's off at college. Until he realizes maybe he's not so alone here, sparking a true friendship with the most unlikely person, Eddie Munson. Eddie(22) hasn't been able to get out of this town either after swearing he would get the hell out of here many years ago. The kids are all graduating this year, which will most likely end up giving the two now men, no reason to stick around anymore. But what will happen to the two friends when Steve realizes the feelings he's thought for so long to just be a platonic friendship have always been a little more? After my overtime was done I clocked out and went to my locker. I changed out of my work coat and disposed of my hair net. As I left the ladies locker room there was a group of men outside in the lobby of the employee entrance. At the centre of it were my two least favorite co-workers; Brock Hansen and Zack Trulley. They had been in school with me from elementary all the way through grade twelve. We had been in the same class. My entire life, they had made fun of me because I was a bigger girl. Since we were all adults, you would think that childish behavior would be behind us; it wasn't. Brock and Zack both continued to call me the various pet names they had for me like 'the walrus' or 'the blob'. When I was a teenager it used to send me to the bathroom in tears, it would send me over the edge and cause me to want to hurt myself. Since I was older, I didn't let it get to me as much as I used to. I decided I wasn't going to let it tear me down, I was better then they were. I wasn't going to allow bullies to hurt me. As I passed by the group of men, Brock shouted at me, "Hey Walrus, where are you going? Back to the sea?" I rolled my eyes and ignored him. I found that not responding was the best way to deal with them. If I acknowledged their behaviour it only encouraged it. I just kept walking with my head held up high. I didn't care what they thought of me. I was a bigger girl and I wasn't going to allow their words to tear me down.

Over the summer, Steven reunited with his father for the first time since he was a baby, which has resulted in some healing, but a lot of heartache because there are still a lot of unresolved issues. Steven's sister or Ava's Mom, Stacey, robbed a bank and killed someone about five years ago, and Steven hasn't had contact with her since. He knows that he needs to closure with her, which means he needs to contact her. For five months now, Steven has been blogging daily about his daily life, and this month is the last month he will be writing.
