Sasuke was always a failure to his clan, nothing he did would ever be good enough for them.
Kakashi was endlessly reminded that he would never be as great as the White Fang was.
And Sakura was abandoned by her parents, who left her in Konoha while they do god-knows-what.

Nobody expected them to amount to anything, but that only gave them the incentive to prove everyone wrong.
