A ship's captain, a crime, a secret. An unwanted daughter of an earl who suddenly discovers that she has inherited her own earldom..through her mother. And in order to protect her inheritance, the countess needs a child. And the captain needs protection. It sounds like a fair exchange, a workable solution for two people in trouble. But...there was that portrait. That damned portrait.

Her plan is simple: focus on her studies, secure a coveted place at the Royal University, and repay her family's debts. When she reluctantly attends a party and a mysterious bond awakens with Ashton-her infuriatingly arrogant classmate-her carefully laid plans are thrown into chaos. For reasons Elizabeth can't fathom, Ashton despises her. But Ashton's no ordinary student. He's a prince, secretly living among commoners to avoid the enemies plotting to destroy his family. As the king reveals there's more to Elizabeth's past than she knows, they realize the bond might not be the only thing connecting them. Bound by forces neither of them understands, and thrust into the dangerous world of court politics, secrets, and creatures thought only to exist in legends, Ashton and Elizabeth race against time to uncover the bond's origins. Rumors of war echo throughout the kingdom, and the force drawing them closer is too intoxicating to resist, yet too dangerous to embrace. Will this connection be their salvation or the undoing of everything they're fighting to protect?
