After Voight saved her from her life on the streets, he pulled many strings to get her into St. Ignatius High School. He wanted her to get a great education and a better life, considering her past. 

She wanted to reinvent herself, this was her chance at a new life. She was going to be a brand new person, and was going to make sure no one would knew about her past. 

The day Jay Halstead was called to the principal's office to show around the new student, was the day his life changed.
