With the mysterious loss of her parents at a young age, Arlan is forced to live alone and raise herself. The inner turmoil that she feels afterward is stuffed and stored away inside her mind where no one would be able to disrupt it, that is until it is provoked through her spirit.
Being the good rule follower that she is, she refuses to let her inner feelings reflect her outward appearance, although her hair color does none to help it. Even though she respects the government, and always attends the Higher Order's practices, she is still criticized by those who know nothing about her, total strangers that believe she is part of some outcast group know as the "Imperfects".
When someone comes knocking on her door and spews nonsense about her parents' death and about the true origin of her pendant, Arlan is forced to face the ugly truth about the society around her, whether she wants to or not. Will her new alliance with Devion and the "Imperfects" give her the answers she desperately needs, or will they just put it off like everything else? Were her suspicions about her parents' death true all along, or are just what they are, suspicions? What does her pendant stand for if not what she believes it stands for?
